Sam Schoolar is the chair of Shine A Light Support Service. Sam is married to Andy and mum has three children, Chloe, Jacob and Joseph. Sam loves life and her favourite things to do are holidaying in Somerset with her fab family, reading, and socialising!
Sam says “I am passionate about working with Shine A Light to provide support and community to our families. Having had cancer, Acute Myeloid Leukaemia at the age of 10, I understand some of what families experience and also where there are gaps in support and services. I have given much of my adult life to volunteering and working with Children’s Cancer Charities and so have a varied and wealthy experience in this field as well as my personal experiences. I have also worked in customer service roles as well as being a medical secretary in the NHS for a number of years.” Since the age of 16 Sam has volunteered with a number of charities involved in the care of children with cancer and has spent many years serving on trustee boards. Sam feels well placed to serve as chair of trustees.
Chris is another of our brilliant trustee board. Step-dad to Sam Schoolar and Laura and a devoted grandparent to Chloe, Jacob and Joseph, Chris enjoys sport (watching, not playing), especially cricket, is a fan of James Bond, loves reading, playing the organ including playing for Meredith road Baptist church where he is also the treasurer and member of the deaconate too.
In his role as a trustee for Shine-A-Light, Chris will be helping with the day to day book-keeping as well as helping at events and in other areas of the running of the charity. As Sam’s Dad he also has first-hand experience of being a parent of a child with Cancer, and has also volunteered for other childhood cancer charities in supportive and fundraising roles in the past.
We are delighted to have Marie on our team of trustees. Marie is an experienced marketing consultant and management trainer, Marie said “I feel that I have lots of skills that will help SHINE A LIGHT to achieve its objectives and I hope that by contributing time and effort to help the charity that it will thrive and be able to achieve great things to benefit families who need the services.
I like the variety and the chance to meet new people and learn new things as well as exercise my skills such as in recruitment and selection. I am married with a 13 year old daughter who has also volunteered for Shine A Light. We need to raise awareness and find people to help us in this great cause”
Sophie is the secretary of Shine A Light. Sophie works as a Customer Support Manager at Jaspers, she is also currently studying for a degree in Management and Leadership at University. During the last 7 years Sophie has built up a wealth of experience working with children and young people of all ages having spent a lot of time running youth groups and babysitting children and earning her the nickname of “Sophie Poppins”. Her welcoming and friendly approach and ability to calmly and ably handle any given situation make her a valuable asset to us.
Sophie says”I absolutely love working with children – there’s something so heart-warming about being around them. I was so pleased when Sam asked me to become a trustee of Shine A Light Support Service. I am so excited to begin this new challenge”. Sophie will be a brilliant team member who will add flare, enthusiasm and excitement to our team and to the charity.

Volunteers make a massive difference to people and communities all over the UK. Shine A Light volunteers help to keep our centre running 5 days a week and are also involved in outreach activities. They help us to launch and manage new projects, they are involved in the community and fundraising events, they help to keep things running smoothly with admin and book-keeping skills and they keep our centre clean and well maintained.
We have full policies and procedures in place and the facility to carry out DBS checks for all roles that require this. We also pay reasonable expenses and offer induction, training and we can give references for regular volunteers too. Take a look at the roles in our Volunteering section and if you have something different to offer that’s not on the list we would love to hear from you. Volunteering can take place in our centre in Coventry, at events and you could be working with families affected by childhood cancer if you wish, or in more behind the scenes roles. Volunteer with your colleagues, friends, and family or on your own to meet new people. You can volunteer regularly, or at events or as a one-off. We will ensure that you have a worthwhile experience and achieve results during your time with us.

“I became unemployed and I found it hard to even get an interview – volunteering at Shine A Light has given me a reason to get up and out of the house because I know I am making a difference by my actions. It has also taught me that it is a great way of improving my self confidence and learning new skills. One of the really great benefits is the lovely people I have met and who I have enjoyed volunteering with. Even when I get a job I will still volunteer for Shine A Light as it has been a pleasure to offer my services to this worthwhile cause and a bonus to feel more positive and part of a team.”
