Welcome to Shine a Light Support Service…

About Us

Shine A Light Support Service was founded in September 2016 and became a registered charity on 12th January 2017. Families can refer themselves directly to the charity and we also work closely with the paediatric oncology team at University Hospital of Coventry and Warwickshire. If you would like to register with us please contact us or complete a Registration Form and return it to: Sam Schoolar, Suite 21, Koco Community Centre, The Arches, Coventry, CV1 3JQ Tel: 02476 676 159  email : sam@shinealightss.org.uk to start the ball rolling.

Shine A Light has been founded by Sam Schoolar, a childhood cancer survivor who is passionate about supporting other families affected by childhood cancer. “My motivation for beginning Shine A Light is a life-long journey with Childhood Cancer which started when I was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukaemia at the age of 10. The treatment I received lasted for two and a half years, the journey is still going. I have strived my whole life to help other families who face this journey, I have volunteered with children’s cancer charities from the age of 16, and have been part of many events aimed at raising awareness, funding for research, paving a better future for children diagnosed with childhood cancer and making life better for those affected now.”

How We Help

We make home visits, support families in clinics at hospital, arrange events and day trips for families, provide support in the form of drop in sessions and we arrange lots of different activities such as art therapy, holistic therapies, events for teenagers and mother and toddler mornings as well as after school clubs, tuition sessions and more!

  • Counselling and Therapy Services.  In 2017 we ran a pilot scheme for a bespoke counselling & therapy service for our families, with the aim of treating the whole family & giving much needed emotional support whilst also helping families to support one another & maintain a sense of normality where possible.  We have extended our counselling services now and offer weekly sessions on Mondays and Thursdays.  We can also now offer counselling to anyone in Coventry and Warwickshire who is affected by any type of cancer.  Please contact us for more details or email: support@shinealightss.org.uk

We have secured funding to provide newly diagnosed families with a family welcome pack which will be gifted to families who are within the first six months of treatment for childhood cancer or who have a child who has relapsed within the last six months. The packs will contain a range of gifts for the whole family aimed to provide some comfort and fun for families who are going through tough times. Each pack is worth £125 based on a pack for a family of four and includes: a game (such as monopoly etc), a throw, a popcorn maker and popping corn, sweets, a DVD, a voucher for a meal and our welcome folder.

Amount What this will pay for
£30 One counselling session to help families through this distressing time
£125 Will provide one family welcome pack that we deliver to families that have a child that has been diagnosed with cancer. The welcome pack including sweets, a throw, a popcorn maker, a DVD and a board game as well as a voucher for a take away! (see picture)
£200 A night out for our Teenagers. Our teen group enjoy a variety of activities such as bowling, cinema, a meal out etc thanks to the donations of our generous supporters. It’s a great way for them to relax in a comfortable atmosphere and have a bit of fun.
£50 A print run of leaflets or posters promoting our service to be distributed to hospitals and clinics or A print run for leaflets/posters to use to promote a coffee morning or event
£500 This will enable us to run a fun event for our families such as quiz nights etc and for this we can provide all refreshments and an activity

History and Objective of the Charity

Alongside a trustee board of seven, Sam founded Shine A Light Support Service in September 2016, choosing the name for the charity in October 2016 and achieving registered status in January 2017. Shine A Light’s objective is to promote and protect the health and relieve the needs of children aged up to 24 who are suffering from cancer, their families and carers within Coventry and Warwickshire, in particular by the provision of a comprehensive support service. We fulfil our objective with the provision of a range of support services.

Shine A Light Support Service is the first charity set up with the sole objective of supporting families with childhood cancer in the Coventry and Warwickshire area. We work with families with a child or young person between the ages of 0 and 24 years from the date of diagnosis for as long as each family needs us. We are aware that there are many families in Coventry and Warwickshire who we have yet to reach, who are or have been affected by childhood cancer. We are here to help and support and would love to hear from them. Families can refer themselves by filling in a registration form or contacting us.
